A lifetime project:
finding great images within a 30 mile radius from home

THE PROJECT

Like many of you I’m sure, I love my time shooting landscape photography in Snowdonia, the Lake District, or some other fantastic National Park in our beautiful country, but also like many of you I don’t live right on the doorstep of one of these amazing places, so I only get to visit rather infrequently for my photography.

This is how my idea for Everyday Landscapes was born.

If you can find and take great photos in your local area, imagine how much it will benefit you when it comes to visiting the ‘honeypots’. Not only will it help in terms of getting that famous image, but also in giving you the ability to find other great shots in that area, because you have already put the effort in locally to hone your skills.

That’s why I’ve put together a series of videos showing you exactly how I go about producing great images locally, from finding the shot, working the composition, through to processing and finally presenting the completed image.

Find Great Images all Around you

We can become so focussed on the images that we see on social media and YouTube, that we often overlook the beauty that is right on our own doorstep!

Wherever you live in the UK I guarantee that, with a bit of research, you will find some amazing photo opportunities in your local area.

Finding those images and learning how to tease out a shot in what might at first appear to to be a difficult location helps us to learn techniques that benefit us when we travel to the more well know spots.

LOCAL BEAUTY

WOODLANDS

Woodlands are always an excellent source of local photography.  Everyone has at least a small coppice of trees in the local vacinity, whether that’s at a nearby park or nature reserve.

LANDSCAPES

If you can find a field and a tree then you have the makings of an excellent image.  Throw in some nice light and a change of season and you’re onto a winner!

ARCHITECTURE

Everywhere you look there are signs of man’s interaction with nature.  Whether that’s something like a windmill or church or something simpler like a wooden fence, these features can make for excellent focal points for your images.

INTIMATE VIGNETTES

If you find yourself in a location that’s a little more difficut to tease a composition from, then going in close and looking for simple intimate images can be a great idea.  There can often be beauty in the small details.

About GARY

I have been capturing landscapes for nearly ten years, and I’ve had a successful YouTube channel for over six of those. I also shoot street and wildlife photography, but landscapes and woodlands are where I’m at my happiest, and this new project is something that I really think will help take my photography to the next level.
